All social media platforms allow users to embed video, and on Facebook you can upload movie files directly to your page. But there are two giants in the world of online video sharing: YouTube and Vimeo.

» Enormously popular: 1 billion active users every month, generating 4 billion views per day

» Revenue: If your videos get enough views you’ll be invited to a revenue sharing partnership

» Customisation: You can style up your channel visually with backgrounds and themes

» Unlimited uploads

Youtube CONS

» Competition: your videos risk getting lost in the sea of videos out there

» Comments: YouTube’s comments section is renowned for inappropriate remarks and spam

» Removal without warning: YouTube can take down your video without warning if a community member flags it as inappropriate viewing

Vimeo PROS

» Quality: Vimeo attracts the best-quality, most beautifully shot videos

» Layout: a cleaner site and minimal ads (with a Pro account it’s ad-free)

» Priority upload: with a Pro account, you can upload cleaner videos quicker

Vimeo CONS

» Less traffic: Vimeo is much smaller than YouTube – about a tenth of its size, in fact
» Cost: the Pro account requires a fee to be paid. Some of the site’s best features are only available via Pro
» Limited uploads: maximum of 50GB per year

Whether you’re shooting stills or video, good composition is critical: without it, even the most compelling of scenes can look unbalanced or boring. The rule of thirds can help you get your composition right. When you look through your viewfinder or at your screen, imagine three evenly spaced lines running horizontally and another three vertically, giving you a total of nine rectangles.
